Rape on eve of Children’s day


Two soldiers, one of the Sri Lanka Army and the other of the Civil Defence Force, were remanded till Oct.10, 2008 by Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ruchira Weliwatta and Additional Magistrate Shiwantha Manchanayaka on the charge of kidnapping and raping a 14 year old schoolgirl on the eve of the International Children’s Day.
The suspects were produced before two magistrates separately. A soldier of the Kurrkai army camp K.D. Priyantha Udawatta and a soldier of the Civil Defence Force attached to Thanthirimale police G. Ajith Somasiri of Indigaspothana, Thanthirimale are alleged to have kidnapped the schoolgirl and raped her in a room of a restaurant in Market Place, Anuradhapura. The Manager of the restaurant W.H.M. Padma Kumari of Elayapattuwa, Anuradhapura was released on certified bail of Rs.50,000 each by two sureties.
The victim was referred to JMO Anuradhapura Ajith Jayasena for a medical report. Inquiries revealed that the victim’s mother is employed abroad. OIC Hidagama police and Anuradhapura Child and Women Bureau initiated inquiries and arrested the suspects on a complaint of the girl’s father.
