    Guys,
What's your idea about disaster preparedness of Sri Lanka.
By tsunami, 50,000 died in 30 minutes, and this count
far over weighs the total deaths by the war, for 30 years.
The met department was unable to disseminate the alert
sent to them in a timely manner.

Today, some fishermen were dead due to heavy winds.
Met department alert has come very late i guess.
When i got the news alert in my mobile, I was experiencing
    heavy winds for many hours.
I'm sure, it has been very late for the fishermen.

On top of that, the authorities had not dispatched rescue teams,
    until the public started protesting.

I think we have to think as a country.
I think constructive criticism of our own weaknesses/ mis managements
is ok, if it would save a life in future.

Mchn you expecting this from a government that can't provide stable electricity to houses even.It will never work with these lazy ass government workers..you should check the last update date on any government site, expired by years..either they all have to die or we have to die to fix this...

    Thanks for all contributed.
A reasonable level of alertness can be achieved even with out specialists about weather.
We all might agree that the technology we (SL met dept) have and the knowledge we have is very primitive.
If we could assign a single person (a duty roster working 24h x 7 d) with a reasonable
level of computer literacy, would be enough as the first step.
This is because, most of the resources/ information are readily available over the internet.
    e.g. www.weather.com

For example, my android based mobile phone applet, locates where I am
and it sends me an alert if there is a possible tsunami threat to my location.
So, I trust and depend on my mobile phone, than I trust the Sri Lankan Met department.

    Open for discussion.

By viewing at all the quick responses, I realize that this has become a
"FELT NEED" of our country, by today.
If any authorities come across this thread, please consider the
facts, which are being discussed, and adapt them to our situation
    as applicable.

The point is, we dont have to re-invent the wheel.
The knowledge and information is out there freely.
There are people who do forecast weather much better.
Only thing, as a country, we have to collaborate with the international community/ organizations who forecast weather. The met department sri lanka does not have to build up knowledge/ information from scrap.
But we have to have a dedicated staff who work 24X7
The number must not be high.
But they should be competent/ authorized to disseminate a message in a timely manner.
(giya paara tsunami ekedi, avilla thibuna fax eka, media walata denna nenek hitiya nam jeevitha 50,000 bera ganna thibunane)

Statistically, weather problems weighs more than even the war lasted 30 years.
By the tsunami, many people died in 30 minutes. But the war lasted 30 years did not kill that much people.

So, if someone argues, we should spend on met department, than we spend for national security, we can't say it is not rational.

    For your consideration

But there are reliable international sources.

I experienced this in another country tour.
The tour guide tells exactly when it was going to rain and it was very perfect.
I saw he had a GPS. Don't know whether that weather service also included
in that GPS device. But it was an amazing technology.

Ape rate thiyana technology eka gana dukath githenawa
    The knowledge is out there.
We have to learn from them and make use of them.
We don't have to re-invent the wheel i guess

This idea just came to my mind.
How about creating a Specialized "disaster response team", say, under the
    ministry/ department of defense.

This unit shall consist of fire fighters, divers, paramedics
and they shall get continuous training from time to time
with regard to how to face different disaster scenarios.
