A REUTERS television cameraman was shot dead on Saturday during a violent clash between Thai troops and anti-government protesters in Bangkok that killed 12 people.

Hiro Muramoto, a 43-year-old Japanese national, was shot in the chest and arrived at Klang Hospital without a pulse, hospital Director Dr Pichaya Nakwatchara said. Muramoto, who had worked for Reuters in Tokyo for more than 15 years, was married with two children.

    'Strategic move' by red shirts

Red-shirt protesters yesterday abandoned Phan Fa Bridge, shifting their main protest site to the Rajprasong area in what their leaders described as a strategic move in preparation for a second crackdown.

    REd shirt leader saved

It was a new bungle in a week that has seen the troops abandon the fight in the wake of bloody street battles that have left 23 dead. As special forces surrounded the SC Park Hotel in northern Bangkok, the Deputy Prime Minister, Suthep Thaugsuban, announced in a televised address that the authorities were swooping on ''terrorists'' and their leaders inside the building.

The terrorists, it later emerged, were leaders of the Red Shirt protesters, but the mission ended in dramatic failure after the suspects managed to flee. The Red Shirt leader Arisman Pongruangrong climbed down an electric cable from the third floor before being rushed away by jubilant supporters

    Reds receive stern Army warning

Security forces would never allow a repeat of use of force against riot troops, Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday, suggesting tough measures will be used to stop the protests spreading from Rajprasong intersection to Silom Road.

Dozens of Thai monks, clad in vivid orange robes, untangle their hands bound with sacred Buddhist thread after performing a chanting ceremony to protect the anti-government "Red Shirts"

Since mass protests began in Bangkok in mid-March demanding snap elections, the red-dressed crowds have been speckled with the monks' distinctive attire despite a long-held monastic custom of keeping out of Thai politics.
