Retired soldier offers to hang criminals free of charge
His daughter’s killer on death row

A retired soldier says he is ready to hang criminals including his 26-year-old daughter, Nishadi Buddhika’s killer.
S. K. D. Somaweera, formerly of the Gemunu Watch, wounded in action during his deployment in operational areas during the war, yesterday told The Island that he was volunteering to be the hangman and expected absolutely nothing in return for his services which he said he offered free of charge to make Sri Lanka a safe place to live in.
Asked whether he supported recent calls for the implementation of death penalty, Somaweera said that he endorsed it wholeheartedly as there was no better way to deal with maniacs who snuffed out innocent lives and caused untold suffering to the hapless men, women and children.
Somaweera has recently written to Prisons Commissioner P. W. Kodipilli offering his services to the Prisons Department. He said that his daughter had been raped and killed on Nov 3, 2006 while she was returning home from work.
Samantha Thilakasiri, alias ‘Wade Suda’ was sentenced to death by hanging. He is being held at the Welikada Prison.
