The government has stated that Rs 44.84 billion had been earned in 2009 through duties imposed on various items including sugar, gas, milk powder and fuel.
The government had made this statement in parliament in response to an oral question posed by UNP Colombo District parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake.
The answer tabled by the government in the House states that Rs 676 million had been earned through taxes from the importation of milk powder, Rs 749 million through sugar, Rs 81 million through dhal, Rs 349 million through onions and Rs 1.09 billion through fuel.
