I do think so! its a real pain to configure GRUB for newbies lol
Almost all new *nix distros configures grub automatically as they detect existing operating systems and make the grub entries. Hardly anything for the user to do.

its different with win7 thats the case win7 has another separate partition for its boot manager(dont ask me why) but it has :P when there are 2 or more NTFS partitions it uses existing ones, what happened me was that i formatted the other NTFS(which had xp on it, but win7 was using it :S) The bootmgr is missing now ...thats some MS for you! lol

hence my question if MS is trying to stop/discourage the use of multiple OSes.

of cause man they cant fight back and win but atleast it stops the company from making shit software -- they are competing and still acting dirty. I mean when Bill stepped out it just suddenly got better! win7 was awesome but here comes MS's dirty *ss work :growl:

put COMPIZ and a suitable window manager(i use emerald)
    sudo apt=get install compiz
    sudo apt=get install emerald
    sudo emerald --replace

    that'll run emerald

but how good is win7 really ? Have they redone the kernel memory management completely to match the unix model ? does it have thread management at the same level of unix ?

they have redone mem management alot i can't say whether its at the same level cos i didnt benchmark the two. Windows actually has more problems to answer in memory exploits :P they have redone the library loading architecture to the kernel and other windows programs that are the bases of virus attacks.

for example they are not allowing custom code/dlls to be loaded on to the windows sound system directly they have a separate executable that handles *alien* code :P they have improved since XP alot but can't say it matches Unix model cos Unix is older than Windows and Unix main executables were written mostly by universities ..same goes for Linus too this is his lil project nee  so i think it is more solid, actually the solidity can be measured when the OS is challenged by new technologies, for instance Unicode at the early stages of Linux there wasn't a clue about 2 byte characters but it survived the transfer and is very successful -- ofcause unicode support in Linux is higher than that of Windows even 7 has problems with Unicode implementation--still!

its not a question of unix codes being older. The unix memory management model was well known when MS started working on windows. Only they didnt use because DOS didnt use it. They either had to re do DOS or start from scratch. Guess the accountants vetoed the idea of redoing the kernel and they went ahead with the DOS memory management system for windows.

Yea most decisions taken on Windows are because of commercial reasons lol thats the whole problem behind backwards compatibility! win 7 even check most programs by the name and arrange a suitable environment for those programs just because people will stop from upgrading to win7:lol:
