The Opposition common Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka declared that , even if Prabhakaran’s mother and Father deemed that they should extend support to him , he would accept their support. This declaration triggered a storm of controversy in the State media circles.. Ministers of the Govt. too started claiming that seeking support of the parents of Prabhakaran is most perilous. But the irony of ironies is , this is being stated by a Govt. which is still obtaining the support of a hard core LTTE terrorist leader Karuna. There had sprung up speculations whether Gen. Fonseka is going to use Prabhakaran’s parents for his future political plans when he announced, like how he destroyed the deadliest terrorist Prabhakaran , he can also achieve his honorable goals in his struggle in the best interests of the country with the support of Prabhakaran’s parents . It is Gen. Fonseka who played the lead role in the killing of Prabhakaran. This enunciation of the General that he is prepared even to enlist the support of Prabhakaran’s parents may be to demonstrate that he is a different person altogether today. Perhaps , by this he is trying to convey a message to the Tamil population in the IDP camps. The message to Prabhakaran’s parents and the Tamil people in the camps is , their rights to free exercise of their franchise and their desire to elect a candidate of their choice shall be safeguarded.
It is very clear that the Govt. is gravely offended by Gen. Fonseka’s utterances in relation to Prabhakaran’s parents. This is particularly because the Sri Lanka (SL) Govt. has already incurred the wrath and ire of the Tamils in SL, Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Diaspora for confining the parents of Prabhakaran to a separate refugee camp .They protest that the entire family of Prabhakaran had sacrificed their lives towards the Tamils’ cause , and therefore Prabhakaran’s parents who have survived the final days of the war should be respected.
The Army leader who said he would not allow Velupillai Prabhakaran to make his speech on the Great Hero’s day on 27th November this year ; subsequently , after killing Prabhakaran and making an announcement to that effect , now claiming that he is prepared to accept the assistance of even Prabhakaran’s parents for the common benefit of the country is certain to provoke a controversy, although his announcement has another connotation that he has no grudge or embitterment against Prabhakaran’s parents despite the fact that Prabhakaran was instrumental in sending a suicide bomber to kill him. On the other hand , the Govt. which had even blocked the pension payment due to Prabhakaran’s father is naturally shocked and perturbed in the wake of the General’s statement .
Prabhakaran’s father Thiruvenkadam Velupillai was a Govt. servant attached to the Sri Lanka Railways Dept. Sometime after the war broke out, he left with his wife to Tamil Nadu. There he led an ordinary life receiving his pension he was entitled to as a retired SL Govt. servant. His monthly pension was Rs. 16865/-. While in Tamil Nadu, he avoided media exposure . Despite tremendous efforts made by the Tamil nadu media to elicit information about his son Prabhakaran, he always declined to give an interview to the media. Following Rajiv Gandhi’s death , Prabhakaran and his wife lived in monumental fear in Tamil Nadu. Yet , neither the Central Govt. of India nor the Tamil Nadu State Govt. posed any problems whatsoever to them. Even though their son was charged with Rajiv Gandhi’s murder , that did not impinge on their lives. There aren’t even reports that they have been interrogated by the Indian Security Division over Rajiv’s murder or the terrorist activities in SL. The reason was , the Indian security Division was aware as the SL security Division that they had nothing to do with Prabhakaran’s activities.
They returned to SL from India in 2002, after the UNP came to power and the ceasefire agreement with Prabhakaran was signed.. Since , they lived in the Wanni with Prabhakaran until the war erupted again. During the last days of the war they left the Tamil Tiger controlled zone and arrived along with other refugees on the 13th of May 2009 at the Menik farm camp in Vavuniya. Although it was an issue for the Security Division as to how they entered the Menik farm camp , it is possible they went under cover along with the other ordinary civilians in order to safeguard their lives.
The Security Division came to know that Prabhakaran’s parents are in the Menik Farm camp only on the 28th of May . When the security Division accosted them and questioned , they admitted they are Prabhakaran’s parents. The Security Division later revealed that they had been taken to another camp for their safety.
Recently ,the Tamil Nadu media created a stir in connection with Prabhakaran’s parents. They alleged that the SL Security Division is inflicting undue harassment on them, and urged the Indian Govt. to take action .
When the Tamil Nadu delegation of politicians arrived in SL lately to inspect the Sri Lanka IDP camps , Thirumavalan considered as a Tamil Tiger sympathizer who was with the delegation had questioned the SL Govt. about the parents of Prabhakaran, reports say. The SL Govt. had replied that if they are to be handed over , their custody will be given only to the India. A sister of Prabhakaran residing in Canada had asked for the custody of Prabhakaran’s parents. But , the SL Govt. has not made any positive response. It has now come to light that she is seeking assistance via the UN Organization to get their custody.
The SL Govt. is continuing to hold Prabhakaran’s parents in the refugee camps , perhaps, owing to the fear that if they are released , and their custody is handed over to a Foreign country , they may disclose information they have of the final days of the war. But that does not give cause for the SL Govt. to reject their daughter’s offer for custody.

No two people are identical either in appearance nor in actions. Even the two identical twins can differ in many aspects. Therefore why there is a big shout about Prabhakarans parents. They are only guilty if they have done wrong. Otherwise they are innocent. There are no saints in this world. Justice should prevail at any cost. Exploitation of a man by a man is not allowed. General SF has all the right to enter politics if he wishes to do so. Who is out their in the country to say a big "No". What authority has that individual got to say that. SF is contesting not just for sinhalese buddhist. He is contesting to safeguard the rights of all srilankans who call them srilankans.

It is sad but the same General who sometime back said that he annihilated (Samulagathanaya!!) all LTTEs including those who would have been sympathetic but not actively involved in LTTE activities now tring to say that he is seeking the assistance of Prabakaran for his election campaign. This is Sri Lankan Politics. Shameless, Principleless, ethicless.....and more than anything else having no self respect but only greed for power....

General SF word of saying even if prabakaran's parent intend, they can support him. Yes there is no harm because if MR can help the second most ruthless terrorist, give him a ministeral post, provide him with maximum security then what is the harm of SF openly seeking support.

Can the sins of the children be visited on the parents? fonseka killed prabakaran in the war. His father and mother were not fighting in the war. What sort of government will punish the parents for the crimes of the children? isn't that what the present government did? Sarath Fonseka has rightly said that he is not punishing Prabakaran's parents for the since of their son. Isn't that what morality requires us to do?
