Govt should seize LTTE ceasefire offer: India
Noting with grave concern the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, India on Saturday asked Colombo to seize the opportunity provided by LTTE's ceasefire offer to bring about a pause in hostilities and work for safe passage for trapped civilians.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said India is making arrangements to send an emergency medical unit and medicines to render assistance to internally-displaced persons in northern Sri Lanka.
"The government of India views with grave concern the humanitarian concern that is building up with every passing day in Sri Lanka," Mukherjee said in a statement here.
Citing reports which suggest that over 70,000 civilians are trapped in the conflict zone in Sri Lanka, he said there is acute shortage of food, water and medicines and many innocent lives have been lost in the conflict zone.
"It is reported that the LTTE has offered a ceasefire. While this may fall short of a declaration of willingness to lay down arms, it is our view that the government of Sri Lanka should seize the opportunity presented by the offer to bring about a pause in the hostilities," Mukherjee said.
"The government of India would, therefore, appeal to the government of Sri Lanka to immediately work out safe passage for trapped civilians to secure locations," he said, adding this would require the cooperation of LTTE. (PTI)

Good Call by India. Sri Lanka should take serious note on this request. If ignored, IC action will be harshe and whole country will pay for it.

There is no war now to go for a ceasefire, India is trying to create a difference between Sinhalese and Tamils, GOSL is rescuing Tamils from terrorists in Vanni

It was just a few weeks ago Mr. Mukarjee announced “military victory will bring peace”. Also he reminded us the damage LTTE has done to the Tamils and encouraged the war. MR should remind him that we are not the sort of people who could be manipulated at will. The objective is clear and straight forward – LTTE must lay down its arms and surrender unconditionally. If LTTE is ready to do so, the rest will be rosy for the Tamils and the nation as a whole! If Mukarjee thinks we are here to abide by his orders, he is making a strategic error as India did in 1980s.

No. No way. Don't let LTTE get away to fight for another day. Only tiger symapthisers will hail India's call, & they don't care a tuppence about the thamils used as cannon fodder by the LTTE.

No ceasefire without total surrender. Safe passage is a different matter altogether but if Velu is not accepting surrendering with his leaders, then a ceasefire in unacceptable. GOSL never give in.

NONSENSE! India says one thing today and another next day. Just ignore them and finish the job ASAP!!

What is the point of having this ceasefire if LTTE not willing to put down their weapons? they do not want to stop this war. True, there are many no of ppl still trapped in that area, but if the government gives in they will keep killing people instead of releasing them. If LTTE cared about these civilians trapped in their war zone, they would have let them leave long time back. LTTE is only interested in killing and nothing else. Enough with useless peace talk. They are not humans to talk about peace. Government should not listen to any of these ppl and carry on with what they are doing now and put an end to this terrorism.

Here Sri Lanka is fighting with a banned terrorist ogganization over two decades, India is one of the cause for this problem, I dont think Sri Lanka Givernment to foolish enough to listen to Indians, they are trying to give oxygen to LTTE, no peace talk with LTTE only surrender, Why not Indians persuade LTTE to release the Tamils suggering in the war zone without pushing Sri Lanka Government. We Sri Lankan lived in harmony with tamils for centuries know to protect our Brethren.

It would be rather idiotic to assume the LTTE would comply and let go of their last straw [holding our people hostage] just like that. Even if the government calls for a temporary ceasefire for the sake of those people, the LTTE would forcibly hold them back and claim they are 'afraid' to cross over; basically the same old nonsensical rhetoric that manages to consistently hoodwink an unbelievably gullible diaspora constituency! However, I would strongly recommend our government to seriously consider this option for the sake of our people suffering under the clutches of the LTTE. Perhaps it could be a 5 day ceasefire with maximum vigilance and precautions [by the army] calling for the civilians to come over. This time should however be utilized by the army to regroup and rearm for once the civilians have crossed over, the conventional war to wipe out the LTTE menace must resume relentlessly & immediately!

Forget IC for a moment. Hasn't the whole country including so many who faught for LTTE paid the price already?

Mukergie! U all created this menace.Do not advice how to get rid of terrorists, civilians casualties are your responsibility & if a safe passage is given,LTTE will get more & more help to flee the area. SL Govt is doing it good.

SriLanka is facing the LTTE terrorism created by India,Last 30 years blood thirsty LTTE killed more than 70,000 Sinhalese Muslim & Tamils but India never concern, Why now? support for LTTE''s servival,Shame on you India.

India should have one voice; either they should support a democratic government or take side of the terrorists. What would it be?

Terrorists should be wiped out. They are not fit for negotiating purpose.

If LTTE's worry is the plight of the civilians, they can release them despite the war. Already thousands have come to safe arears amids of the war. But this blood thirsty animals want to find a way to save their butts at the expense of innocent civilians. If Indian government is also honestly worried about civilians , should pressurise LTTE terrorists to release civilians. But their worry is only about how to cling on to power.

What's the point? Why India can't just demand LTTE, the killer's of their former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi to release the civilians. Terrorism must be eradicated. Is India ready to go for a cease fire with the terrorist organizations working against India ?

What nonsense!!! India should mind their OWN affairs without interfering into the internal affairs of Sri Lanka. A ceasefire will only give the LTTE cowards (the babaric pussy cats) breathing space and the task of our brave forces more difficult. Govt of SL should ONLY go for a ceasefire if LTTE pussy cats agree on our terms i.e. LAY DOWN THEIR ARMS AND SURRENDER!!!! In any case, the civilians will be free (for life) in another week or two when the SL forces wipe out the LTTE pussy cats from the face of this earth. Then all ethnic gropus of Sri Lanka (Singhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers & others) have had enough of this menance and it is high time to put an end to this and not waste another golden opportunity!!!

The Ceasfires have never worked from the LTTE point of view who took this as a arms build up and regrouping. India will regreat if the leader jumps to another country during a ceasfire. It's lay down of arms or no go for a ceasfire. If LTTE is so concern about the civilians why not let them do their will of choosing what is best for them ?

Although it is sad, we have many of the world superpowers against us. First Canada, then the US, and now India. These countries have called upon us to have a ceasefire. Although we are on the verge of eliminating the Terrorist L.T.T.E, at a economic time like this, we better have these countries on our side, and listen to what they say.
