A student of De Mazenod College Kandana, Amila Randika, has devised a transmission system which can avert accidents at railway crossings.

Any vehicle owner could fix the system to a vehicle and receive sonar signals of incoming trains within the radius of 400 meters, the Transport Ministry said.

Transport Minister Dalls Alahaperuma told The Island that the invention was the first of its kind in Sri Lanka and vehicle users would have safe passage when driving across gateless level crossings.

Even the gate-keepers at railway crossings would be able to trace the position of the incoming trains within the radius of 400 meters.

Minister Alahaperuma said that student Randika had been able to get the patent certificate for his invention and the Government would find a company to produce the new devise. The Transport Ministry was of the view that the device would be of immense value to all motorists.
