Sexuality in Sri Lanka

I wasn't sure what forum this kind of topics fall so here it goes in the Talk! section. I am not a new member, just made a new account to protect the innocent/guilty.

alright so the goal here is two folds, I want to understand my girl because she seems very conservative when it comes to sexual things (who happens to be from sri lanka) and just in general get a idea of sri lankans & culture.


Whats the average age you think the average sri lankan guy/girl becomes sexually active?
The average age to lose virginity?
Pre-marraige sex ok or not? (does almost everyone think this way?)
Does views on this change depending on area (colombo, mathara, galle, etc)?
Whast acceptable, not acceptable, or anything else you want to share regarding this?

it depends girl 2 girl.. bt i think most gals dont want to have sex b4 marrage... bt ya some might want to... like some colombo 7 gals will tend to dat side dan da others.. bt i think most of them will not have sex with any one b4 marrage....

id agree with Neon. i thin k all ur questions depend on whether or not premarital is ok. but that depends on the individual. in general i dont think theyre ok with it. but like neon said i assume it depends on the girl.

ya dude that sounds about right. the whole premarital thing is sorta taboo in the culture as of yet. i think it would be idiotic forcing stuff like that.. HABAK is the word hehe

Ha Ha That's a good one May be what our friend is trying also to clear out that type of doubt.

It's all depend on how she was brought up and what type of a society she lives in.

The society / family enviornment that she lives around, play a crucial roll on her behaviour and attitude.

I would like to add some comments on this topic though i am not currently staying in SL. Basicaly "Sexuality" on of the topics taboo in the Sri Lankan sociaty.I am still belive it has come with cultural and religonal barries. Matter of fact things happening but rarely expose the sociaty. Any way refers to your question about " Pre-marraige sex " , isnt comman in SL. But in US...... its very often happening .But they know very well how to protect them selves and perform well. i would like to mention couple of resons why people in US havePre-marraige sex:

*US socaity isnt concern about virginity of the girl before marrige.
*Thats a kind of a way of get to know the partner very well.

Any way i see both pros and cons on this issue. What i want to tell you guys we are not still living 70's and 80's .Things keep changing every day such as Belives, activities, ect... .We should change in a good way and we got to make a change .I belive you guys got my point.

Even though US society isn't concern about virgnity before marraige, there is a growing concern about rising level of teen pregnancy in the US. And that attitude has become one of the reasons for that.


In Sri Lanka it's strict cultural influence and this so call taboo has helped them to prevent that type of disaster happen to some extend.

So as I said before my opinion is it's all depend on the environment that she lives in. Insecurity also play a part roll in this matter.

All in all mutual understanding and respect between the two partners can solve most of these issues.

not only sri lankan.... most of gals and guys become sexually active 15- 16.....

ya most of times.... around colombo in some high class societys and some othr cases....rarely....

it depends on the girl....but specially around colombo specially gals come from rich familes want sex b4 marriage...and it dont need a relationship between just meet in college party and spend the night...like in western countries....it becomes common now...
girls looking 4 those stuff now in sl more than sometime ago...thr wr big different i see wen i went to sl last month.....i dont think it is bad or something.....but have to use ur brain b4 u do something

• Girls Bialogically get active when they reached 11 - 16 years of age.
• Losing virginity is a big step even in Western world.
• Pre-marriage sexual relationships happen in SL.
• Yes it changes with where she lives. Cos most of the city environments do most. 17 years and older. I've seen and heard bout this alot. I'm from city !!!
• Regarding bout this ; what I have to say is talk to her and discuss. Respect her and on your next step be protective

one thing that I am now curious is the behavior of people after marrying, because if the culture has stamped in your brain since a kid that sex is bad/guilty and not discussed kept as a taboo... I assume lot of married couples having problems down the line sexuality wise even after marrying.

Just makes me curiouse...do you want to understand her or just want to somehow sleep with her?..

If you love her these questions wont matter, and if you want to sleep with her culture doesnt matter..simple.

if she rejects then poor you

P.S: when it was dark ages people were like animals eating whatever thay want, sleeping with whome ever they want..etc then it was called uncivilized society. but west calls itself the peak of human civilization but i dont see anything different from then except for reasons..funny

The average age to lose virginity? average is about 17 years. Much lower for the Muslims and Hindus and quite high for buddhists and Christians.

Pre-marraige sex ok or not? (does almost everyone think this way?)No penetrativ e sex by social order. But non-penetrative sex, almost always happens before love marriages. And nealy half the couples who get married have had sex before their marriage.

Does views on this change depending on area (colombo, mathara, galle, etc)?Yes. mainly according to the social class. uneducated ones just go with their feelings. Educated ones are more restrictive. But ones like doctors and medical students don't care, becuse they know how to prvent unwanted pregnancies.

Testing for virginity (the notorious white sheet experiment) is ast becoming non-popular. about 1/3 of guys don't care whether their wife is a virgin or not.
