What do you think about sharing music online ? To be more exact, sharing Sri Lankan Music in P2P (Torrents, Bare share, e Mule, ect.)

Will it help artists to promote their music ? Will it help artists to get their music to a wider audience (Sri Lankans living abroad) or Is it wrong ?

We have even seen the first Release Group that exclusively releases Sri Lankan Music torrents... So it is picking up..

So what r your views on this ?

    Lets have a serious discussion..

Concept behind sharing music is good coz it promote the Musician. but in Sri Lanka they are not gaining anything from Sharing. only promotions so as far as i know elakiri also doing the same thing but not p2p but elakiri is way better than anything i guess :) :) :)

Yes.. I too Agree... bt for entire albums P2P is the best ne ?

My view is.. I'm totally against Sri Lankan Albums getting Pirated & sold (For commercial purposes).. Then if r artists cannot get their albums sold in Sri Lanka then where ? Only the Torana/ME/Sony albums cost about Rs. 500 all the others are around Rs. 250..So common....Pirating for Commercial gain should be taken action against (and is..good)

Bt The Listeners also hav a right to know what they paying before buying dont they ? Why would I pay Rs. 500 for an album where only 2-3 songs are good...? Then arnt we getting ripped off by the artists & the record labels... ? thats why online music sharing is great.....

I should hav the option of listening to the album before buying it.. Like checking an electrical item before I guy it (they even have a warranty if its defect..bt we dont have the option of returning an album if it sucks do we ?.. :)... Its only fair

MP3s are just virtual stuff inside your PC or in your MP3 player... Its not like having an actual album collection...So people BUY albums & will keep on Buying them...Its just total crap thinking that music sharing will kill album sales...

to a certain extend! as the sri lankan music industry is still at an infant stage it is good to promote them via p2p file sharing methods. as its free n fast n has a wider reach. however popular artists who dont need any sort of promotion by spreading songs as much as possible will be affected by it.

So r u in the opinion that people will stop buying albums just because they downloaded a crappy quality mp3 album from the net ?

This is just my point.. If the Album is good then just because they downloaded a mp3 version of it wont stop people from buying it.. If it is bad then word of mouth alone will reduce the sales...

this is sri lanka. the amount of money people are able and willing to pay for a cd is much less. for them to download an album n later buy the cd, the album has to be significantly special.
and i doubt people in sri lanka buy albums before they listen to a preview of it on the radio or somewhere. so it depends on the word of mouth anyway

don't think any1 will buy the album after listenin to mp3s that have been downloaded unless he or she is a hardcore fan so it's pretty obvious artists won't let their albums get naked on the net.

so what artists do is they usually release their so called "hits" from an album in order to grab listeners attention......and let him/her fantasize about buying the album :)

    my personal opinion:
sharing music online is bad for a country like sri lanka (its pretty amazing to see international artists make millions though their albums get naked online) but if I get a chance to download them I won't bother buying the cd unless I'm really impressed about it (in order to keep the album as a memory..etc)

I agree that releasing brand new albums to the net just after there release will harm the artists... we dont have a huge market like the international artists do.. so we should help r ones too..

bt what about after 6 months or so... all the people who wants to buy the albums would hav done so by then... ?

my point is after a certain time period its more of a benifit to them to get their stuff in the net because from that they will reach a more broader audience... all the Sri Lankans who are living abroad will be able to listen to their Home Country's music..and even others who must hav never heard about lets say Iraj..will hav a chance to listen to it..

    Everything has 2 sides...

I used to work in the music business and know many famous english artists who believe that online music sharing is wrong. It takes away their livelihoods. But in some cases (such as Daddy on EK) you get to hear some songs and clips, see some videos then when full albums are released it gives you the opportunity to give something back to the artist by buying the full priced cd (which i did @ torana)

. Many bands that i now like i have initially heard their music on xbox or playstation games so i believe there are many platforms for you to be introduced to various bands but then you should go out and buy the cd's to put a little in the pocket of the artists who've worked hard to bring you such good music.
    Good point ne?

means at the time when album gets old?
then again sharing online will help for the people who've missed out and yeah it will help the artist to sell his upcoming albums.......your point is true in that case. Could implement that as a marketing trick I guess
