HAMBANTOTA: The Government has decided to set up the country's largest Botanical Garden in Hambantota.

Secretary to the Ministry of Promotion of Botanical and Zoological Gardens S. Liyanagama told the Daily News that the initial investment will be Rs.100 million.

"We expect to seek Cabinet approval if we need more funds to successfully complete the project," he said. It would also explore possibilities for foreign funds to carry out the project.

Liyanagama said the Ministry has already acquired 300 hectares from the Mahaweli Authority in Mirijjawila. The land possessing procedure has already commenced.

The major objective of this project is to attract more tourists targeting enhanced foreign exchange.

This will also raise awareness among locals and foreigners on different types of flora and fauna while providing educational opportunities for schoolchildren and university students.

This is the first time that a formal botanical garden is being set up in the dry zone. Flowering plants and trees endemic to the dry zone will be especially displayed. The project will be complete within the next three years.

Construction, slated to begin next year, will be supervised by local botanical, gardening and horticultural experts.
