Simon and Garfunkel claim they're best friends forever

SIMON and Garfunkel's 40-year partnership has seen its share of on-stage harmony, off-stage rivalry. But now they're back together, and getting on better than ever.
An anecdote relating to their last tour of Australasia more than 25 years ago best illustrates why Simon and Garfunkel are perhaps the most legendary antagonists in rock history.
When asked to share their memories of that trip, Art Garfunkel recalls the Australian sunlight, the upbeat people and New Zealand's natural beauty, all enjoyed with his partner at the time, actor and director Penny Marshall.
Paul Simon remembers scoring some days off on the New Zealand leg, hiring a car and driving down to Mount Cook.
‘‘My recollection of it was driving past Artie and Penny hitchhiking down the road,'' he says. ‘‘Artie's a walker.''
Garfunkel explains: ‘‘We were walking up this big hill, Penny and I, to get the vantage point.''
Neither says whether Simon stopped and offered them a ride.
Simon and Garfunkel are tethered as cultural immortals, thanks to a handful of albums released in the years when rock 'n' roll came of age.
From 1965 until their acrimonious split in 1970, they made an indelible stamp on the era with such modern classics as Mrs Robinson, The Sounds of Silence, I Am a Rock, A Hazy Shade of Winter, The Boxer, Cecilia and, of course, Bridge Over Troubled Water, which celebrates its 40th anniversary next year.
