    Nice thread indeed!

In my personal opinion, one of the main differences between the old and the new generation of singers is..

Old generation artists sing for the moment, they are inspired by life..and they sing/sang for a PURPOSE!! That was their attitude, most of them never really wanted to sing for the trend..

Like police has to fight for people's safety, Like soldiers has to fight for country, Like media has to criticize to make things happen....old generation artists really had a purpose in most of their songs..and they thought if singing is their job might as well make it count..and they put their hand up and make it count when it mattered the most and when the situation demands it!!!

Um.. if you look at the music industry in SL, especially the old singers, They didnt sing for the moment or were inspired. Reason is that most Singers in SL are only that .Just singers. They dont pen the lyrics (only a few singers penned their own songs). They sing what others wrote.
The song writers however could most certainly have been inspired.

You are quite right... but still there were Singers whom actually made a difference..take Nanda Malini for an instance..she did sing lot of songs when people were really in need of those types of songs, she virtually spoke behalf of the people through her songs!

Songs like: Thun hele kala thula singa pataw, Sukiri Batillange Geethaya, Budune Jesune.. etc etc

She might have not penned them, but she certainly had the gut to sing them!

Can you explain that a bit more ?

She's a professional singer (as were most old time singers) and she needed to sing so I dont see it as she sang for the people who needed songs. She's a Grade A (Radio grading) singer so of cause most song writers and producers will give her songs to sing.
It would be a different case if she sought out those songs cause she wanted to sing them so badly.

Yes maybe every writer and producer wanted to give her songs.. But what I believe is she might have wanted to sing them so badly.. because I recall her "Pavana" titled castte which came out during JVP times, spoke about what's happening in the country.... Whether somebody saw it as a marketing opportunity and let Nanda Malini cater for the demand or Nanda Malini asked writers to provide her with such songs because she felt its needed.. I dont really know! But the main thing is it was there!!!

What I'm trying to say is.. today we don't see such form of art! Today we have a WAR in this country and how many new age singers have actually themed it for a song....so many years pass by but we still hear "Ran Malak lesa" and few other regular songs in the name of our soldiers....why? because its not sellable?

Obviously! though there are a few songs for the forces these days on ITN by some new song writers/singers.

Any industry thrives on what it can sell. Music is not different from that. Professional song writers and singers will only put out what sells.

Though that new song 'Ginigena Mihithalaye' is certainly new talent working on the war theme but a popularity rating would show that 'borukari' is 10 times more popular.

Well... its really good to know that if someone or some media at least take effort to make/write songs in different avenues, more current topics/issues!

Those may not be as popular as "borukari", but at least one of those would definitely be a piece of art that would serve as an investment for the future!
