Here are some of the facts observed during the past 30 hours.
1) People are having mixed feelings on this attack. While some have totally condemned the attack, some are with the opinion that Sirasa deserved this.
2) All 3 TV channels were back on air within 4 hours from the attack as they had a very good disaster recovery plan. They have their news studios and transmitting facilities at a location within the city of Colombo. Well anticipated and quickly recovered.
3) No attack was done to the studios of radio stations at Depanama (Pannipitiya) complex. It was reported that the attackers had no access to this area or were they not interested in destroying this? Hence, all 4 radio channels too have
resumed transmissions within 5 hours from the attack. No disaster recovery plans were available for radio stations in the complex at Colombo City.
4) Continuous “Breaking News” was aired on all 3 TV channels for more than 12 hours which included voice and video clips from people of all calibers from diplomats to general public in Mahiyanganaya, condemning the attack.
5) Radio channels too aired the listener views and text messages condemning the attack throughout the day.
6) Most normal programs has resumed including the much viewed “Ran-Depaya”. It is reported that their media library is located at Colombo, not at Pannipitiya.
7) Some Live TV programs too have resumed on MTV.
8) Most of the lost due to the attack can be claimed through the insurance.
Analyzing the above facts it is obvious although the loss is very high, the effect to the normal operations is minimum. The Sirasa network has gained immense publicity from this incident. So, is this a totally unsuccessful attack or a publicity stunt?
