Sri Lanka's Parliament has approved appointing a multiparty committee to recommend constitutional changes for ethnic reconciliation after a devastating civil war.

The proposal approved Wednesday comes as Sri Lanka faces international criticism for lagging reconcilation efforts after the 25-year civil war ended in 2009.

The proposal would require the committee to recommend changes within six months to ensure that "all people will preserve and promote their respective identities and live with dignity and security as one nation."
