Oct 24, Colombo: Students of Sri Lanka's Peradeniya University have abducted the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Anura Wickremasinghe and several other academics since yesterday evening.
The abduction and detention followed the dialogue between the Deputy Vice Chancellor and the students’ representatives that failed to satisfy the students. The students demand the removal of the lecture ban on several students and the suspension of the judiciary proceedings against the students accused of committing violence.
The crisis of the Peradeniya University took new turns since the students forcibly removed a name board of a new hostel, which was named after the founder of the university. The students put up a name board of former Central Committee member of the Marxist People’s Liberation Front who was killed in the 1989 armed insurrection.
