A group of Somali Pirates who took a shop carrying a crew of Sri Lankans, decided to end their siege and hand back the ransom paid by the SL government after being told that the country needs the money more than the pirates do. One pirate, speaking through the means of a parrot, said, “We initially targeted the ship because we heard that the crew on board were Sri Lankan and if we went straight after their afternoon rice and curry we knew they would put up very little resistance. We’ve also been hearing about new investments coming into Sri Lanka so we thought the country would be able to afford a ransom.” “However once we received the money, we came across an article which specified the level of debt the country is in and we felt really bad about it. We thought we had no hope which is why we took to the seas, but Sri Lanka is in a more precarious position. We know they have also taken to the seas with Port City, which is going to be yet another burden. Which is why we handed back the money and even gave a little bit more.” One of the released hostages said, “The conditions of being held hostage were better than our employment benefits, so we would request the pirates to please take the ship hostage again.” Source
