Sri Lanka government expects to complete Southern Highway by 2011

Sri Lanka's Highways and Road Development Minister T.B. Ekanayaka told the parliament yesterday that the Southern Highway Project connecting Colombo and Matara is expected to be completed in mid 2011.
The estimated internal cost of the Southern Highway Project being carried out in four phases is Rs. 85 billion.
Phase 1 segment from Kottawa to Dodangoda (34 km), is expected to be completed by March 2011 while Phase 2 segment from Dodangoda to Kurudugahahetekma (32 km) is scheduled to be completed by December 2010. Both phases are funded by the Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC).
The project from Kurudugahahetekma to Pinnaduwa (30 km) is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). It will be completed by June 2010. The last phase of the project from Pinnaduwa to Matara (30 km) which is expected to be completed by June 2011 is funded by the China Exim Bank.
ADB and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have agreed to provide supplementary loans to meet the extra cost incurred for the project.
