According to the sources, General Fonseka could have one farewell ceremony within the next two days as his final assignment of the Sri Lanka Army. General Sarath Fonseka earlier sent his resignation letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa requesting permission to retire with effect from the end of this month. However, the President has accepted the resignation with immediate effect. In his 17 page resignation letter submitted Thursday General Fonseka said he was unjustly sidelined by the President, fearing an army coup, into a ceremonial role with no authority.
