Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka this evening has received a response in writing to his resignation letter from President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The letter accepting Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka's resignation has already been sent to him this afternoon, the President's Media Unit confirmed.

According to the sources, General Fonseka could have one farewell ceremony within the next two days as his final assignment of the Sri Lanka Army.

General Sarath Fonseka earlier sent his resignation letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa requesting permission to retire with effect from the end of this month. However, the President has accepted the resignation with immediate effect.

In his 17 page resignation letter submitted Thursday General Fonseka said he was unjustly sidelined by the President, fearing an army coup, into a ceremonial role with no authority.

General Fonseka, although has not disclosed his intentions yet, is widely expected to be the common candidate from the recently allied opposition political parties at the upcoming presidential elections to challenge President Rajapaksa's voter base.
