Sri Lanka today rejected a call by Canada for a ceasefire between the government forces and the LTTE Tigers.
A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry said that Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told the visiting Canadian Minister for International Cooperation Beverly Oda that Sri Lanka was not ready for such a move.
"Responding to a call by the Canadian Minister for a ceasefire, the Foreign Minister noted that the last unilateral humanitarian pause was a failure," the Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier Sri Lanka rejected a similar request by the British and French foreign ministers who visited Sri Lanka last week.
Sri Lankan government has come under increasing pressure from Western governments for a ceasefire despite that two previous pauses failed to achieve the intended result of removing civilians from the conflict zone.
