Sri Lanka's defence secretary has rejected the Tamil Tigers' offer to enter a democratic process after their military defeat by government forces.
In an interview with the BBC, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said the LTTE rebels could not be trusted to give up "terrorism".

"I do not believe the LTTE can enter a democratic process after years of their violent activities," Mr Rajapaksa said.

The rebels had said they would give up violence after their leader was killed in recent fighting in the north-east.

"I am not interested in LTTE at all," the defence secretary - the most senior civilian official in charge of the war against the Tamil Tigers - told the BBC in a wide-ranging telephone interview.

He said there were "enough democratic Tamil political parties in the country" to represent the Tamil minority.

On Sunday, speaking to the BBC's Tamil service, senior rebel spokesman Selvarasa Pathmanathan said they would now use non-violent methods to fight for the rights of the Tamils and had agreed to enter a democratic process to achieve their aims.

yah thats true there are many tamil politicians who really loves The Tamil people

Yes. There can be.

If so, they have to come along to the democratic process via another mean. Maybe through a reputable political party (like Karuna did).

Not through LTTE. LTTE is a terrorist organisation and terrorists doesn't know politics. (Same applies to Karuna and Pilleiyan as well.)

if they wanted to.. why not let them ?..look at JVP.. they were the same as the Tigers..killing everybody in the 90s... but they let go of an armed revolution & entered politics...so if one group can do it so can the LTTE

JVP wasn't a 'terrorist' organisation machan...
They were never the same as the tigers.

UNP was the real terrorist who used brutal methods to eliminate JVP.
But, it maybe the right method at that time... I don't know :)

Anyway that debate is beyond this thread :)

    ---------

LTTE is a worldwidely known terrorist organisation. If the Government of Sri Lanka gives the opportunity to 'LTTE' to come to the political arena, it'll backfire for sure by IC telling GOSL killed innocent people due to fight between 2 political parties.

So if they want to do politics, then they have to establish a political party... But not under the name of LTTE.

Again, that's how I see it. You may have a different opinion and I respect that :)

Apparently it's a one man show by Selvarasa Pathmanathan

    Lust for Power creates greed...
LTTE is banned terrorist organization and as such it cannot enter politics just because it got its ass kicked out militaristically.
If Selvarasa Pathmanathan sincerely wants to do something to the people up north, he can join any existing accepted political party and work for the good of the people.

Exactly. That's what I believe too.
