Washington, D.C. / London, U.K.
The United States, European Union and Canada have condemned Sunday's Tamil Tiger suicide bombing which killed a Sri Lankan minister, saying only a political solution, not violence, would ensure peace.

"The United States denounces this vicious and reprehensible terrorist attack on civilians in the strongest possible terms," a US embassy statement said Monday. "Its perpetrators have achieved nothing other than to cause further suffering among the people of Sri Lanka. Only a political solution, not continued violence, offers the way forward to end the country's conflict."
A suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber killed Sri Lanka's highways minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle as he opened a marathon Sunday in the town of Weliveriya north of the capital.
The attack also killed 13 others and wounded nearly 100, police and officials said.
Fernandopulle was the second minister to be killed this year.
Nation building minister D.M. Dassanayake was killed in a roadside bomb attack in the same district earlier this year.
The Tigers are trying to hit back at the government through bombings after suffering setbacks at the hands of the military in the north and east.
The military went on the offensive after the government scrapped a ceasefire with the Tigers, saying the rebels had repeatedly violated the truce and dodged all efforts to resume peace talks.
Western countries have however appealed to both sides to resume peace talks, saying violence would not solve the problem.
The European Commission also condemned Sunday's attack.
Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, expressed deep shocks over the attack.
"The EU condemns all forms of terrorism and violence against civilians," a European Commission statement said.
"The EU continues to believe that there can be no military solution to the conflict in Sri Lanka and only a negotiated settlement can open the way for a lasting peace."
Canadian foreign minister Maxime Bernier said in a statement that Canada "strongly deplores" the attack.
"Canada condemns all forms of terrorism. We are deeply concerned about the worsening impact of this ongoing conflict on civilians, including humanitarian workers and human rights defenders. It is clear that violence will not bring lasting peace to Sri Lanka."
The EU, US and Canada are among Sri Lanka's key aid donors and have been trying to put pressure on both sides to resume peace talks.

well guys my opinion z foe this war to end there shud be a military as well as political solution for dis....bt political solution does nt mean giving da so cald eelam to da tigers nor giving da power to da tigers....dat z y i say our govt shud be offensive as well before goin for the political solutions.... well ma frds no war can b won purely frm military actions, there should b political solutions too...
bt wot made me soo angry was that US govt n EU pointing their bloody finger to us n say u shud stop da war n go for da political solution... they dnt hav a single ryt to say dat cos take US wot da hell r they practising in IRAQ n AFGANISTAN killing thousands of civilians n distroy their cultures too n dis bloody EU nor UN do not interfere into wot US doin rather poking their bloody fingers into countries lyk us..
machan at da end f da day these wars in da world never end n it cant b dne too unless otherwise a change in perceptions, attitudes take place....neither the powerful weapon selling nations wont let da poor countries to stop their wars...
NATIONAL WARS HAS BEEN THERE IN THE PAST N WILL HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE TOO......:( :( :(

Mona Political solution da...bambuwa thamai..thawa parak peace talks dala LTTE eka strong karanna wenna athi..

So far, the only thing GOSL has not tried is the full throttle war..obviously, the LTTE's weak now hence the begging for political bullshit solution..so, i guess we should continue war until LTTE goes down..

once the LTTE is beaten to the extinct, then a political solution would be required to bring 'em up to the justice etc..

that being said, i feel for the day-to-day sri lankans who are going thru the hardships such as "badu mila" and petrol prices..but one should understand that the country is on a war and it is NOT the current government who is responsible for that..

    Well said..my thoughts too...

If u r starting talks with a bastard Org like the LTTE u need to do so from a Stronger position than they are.. Thats the mistake Ponil did.. He gave everything the bitches asked for & so much so that if the LTTE had asked him to lick their asses, he would hav...

Bt Since the Military offensive is going well.. ( Not every time bt we have gained the upper hand in many stages & have captured a lot of their territories..).. If the LTTE wants to have talks..then PA can start discussions strongly & they can do the demanding & setting up the rules unlike the previous time.. Then we dont have to bend backwards to their demands..

Its the only way I think..
