    Govt. taxes poor man's water

    Lanka Truth 25th August, 2008. 03.40PM

The government has decided to levy VAT for water bills that are for less than 25 units from the 1st of July.

National Water Supply & Drainage Board states the relevant water bills will be levied a 15% tax from the 1st of July. Additional Gen. Manager of the Board K. Balasuriya says the new tax has been made by a special circular issued by the Ministry of Finance.

More than 70% of the consumers who are in the low income category consume less that 25 units of water and the new tax would make their lives more miserable.

The Additional Gen. Manager also said the 10% VAT levied for those consumed more than 25 units has been increased to 17%.
