The police in Sri Lanka said on Tuesday that all police OICs (Officer in Charge) in the island have been instructed to tighten security during the forthcoming national New Year festive season.

"Festival function organizers are required to obtain prior permission from the area police as many VIPs including politicians are expected to take part," police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekara said.

If an organization is conducting an event, the organizers have to first inform the area police station and then the station OIC will discuss it with the Civil Defense Committee of the area and thereafter adequate security will be provided for the event, the spokesman said.

The decision came after a suicide bomber attacked a Muslim festival event in the southern Matara district last month, killing14 people and injuring more than 40 including a government minister.

Sri Lanka's Sinhalese and Tamil New Year festive season which begins April 13 will be a high security period due to the ongoing civil war between the government troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a separatist militant organization which has been fighting to create an independent state in the north and east for more than two decades.
