Sri Lanka Cricket interim committee president Arjuna Ranatunga has told top experienced players Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena, Muttiah Muralitheran and Chaminda Vaas to stay away from next year’s popular Indian Premier League (IPL) saying that only individuals benefited from it and not the national body in what can be argued as sour grapes for the sport’s chief.
"I take it that the (Sri Lankan) players would be prepared to heed the call to perform for their country in preference to the IPL. At the most, the players concerned would miss a part of the IPL series on account of the tour of England," the Press Trust of India quoted Ranatunga as saying in his letter to the top players.
“By permitting our national players to participate in the IPL, it is private individuals who earn a percentage of the players` earning while Sri Lanka cricket gets no financial benefits whatsoever.", he has further said in his letter to the players.
The report also said that Ranatunga had made it clear to the players that the board released the players for only the inaugural tournament this year which concluded last month and that a tour of England next April and May must be undertaken disregarding the IPL.
But the latest move by Ranatunga is set to further strain relations between him and the players who have already signed to play in the IPL for a three-year period which terminates in 2010.
Ranatunga has reminded the players in his letter that “Sri Lanka Cricket had no objection to the cricketers participating in the inaugural IPL Twenty20 in 2008 subject to they (them) being available for any commitments with Sri Lanka Cricket at any given time” which implies that the players have been released to play for the IPL for a period of one year.
Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lasith Malinga, Farveez Maharoof, Chamara Silva, Dilhara Fernando, Ajantha Mendis and Chamara Kapugedera are the other players lined up by the IPL.
The PTI quotes Ranatunga as saying the tour of England would secure a payment of US $2 million for the Sri Lanka Cricket which would help the governing body improve its financial position”
The report said Ranatunga in order to accommodate a request from IPL, Sri Lanka Cricket agreed to cancel a proposed tour by India to Sri Lanka in 2009 at a loss of US$ 14 million.
