Tharindu Shanaka, 38, a father of two from Batapola, Kondagala in Galle. He had arrived in Israel in September 2025 to work in the construction sector as a carpenter.Officials from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Israel had visited the Salameh Police Station in the Tel Aviv District on Thursday morning to meet with the police team leading the investigation. Two Sri Lankan nationals who had been with the victim at the time of the incident were also questioned by Israeli authorities.According to witness accounts, 13 Sri Lankans were residing in a shelter near the scene. On Wednesday night, around 11 p.m., Shanaka and another individual had reportedly been consuming alcohol in a nearby park.A confrontation allegedly took place when Shanaka went to a corner of the park to urinate. His companion, after hearing a disturbance, alerted others in the shelter, who later found Shanaka with his throat slit.Israeli police have taken a suspect into custody. Authorities have withheld the identity of the suspect pending the ongoing investigation.The body has been sent for forensic examination, and a final autopsy will be conducted once written consent is received from the victim’s wife.Repatriation arrangements will follow for the body to be returned to Sri Lanka for burial, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Israel said.
