Engineers (Pvt) Battaramulla Ltd has successfully built Sri Lanka's largest swimming pool for Piliyandala Central College. The pool would be officially opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at 4.p.m.today.The mentor behind the project, Dr. Rohan Karunaratne said this pool is unique since it was built at a cost of around Rs. 43 million which is at least 50% less of the currently market price for a project of this nature. He said that the main reason for this is that the contract was designed and built by them which eliminated a lot of red tape in between.He said that the project was built for the Sports Ministry and they have also tendered the lowest offer. The pool will be open to the public as well and is a project initiated by the then Minister of Sports Gamini Lokuge. In addition, it has a tier deck diving board, separate changing rooms (men and women) to accommodate for nearly 100 guests and the homogeneous tiles have being laid outside the pool."My company which has been in existence for over three decades has built many swimming pools for leading hotels such as Taj, Deer Park, Siddhalepa and are currently involved in the refurbishment of Hill Top Hotel Kandy and many other hotels.A Graduate of the Society of Engineers (London), member of the Institute of Engineers and Technicians (London) and a Member of the Engineers Registration Board (London) he said that they are also involved in several mega development projects such as Trincomalee integrated water project and many other similar ventures.Commenting in the industry he said that one of the biggest problems they face is the lack of skill labour. "This is because mega development projects are simultaneously happening all over the country and there is high demand for them."He also said that another gray area is the haphazard manner in which overseas contractors and designers work in Sri Lanka.Dr. Karunaratne who is the President of Ceylon Institute of Builders said that it was encouraging to see foreign expertise in Sri Lanka. "But they should try to involve more Sri Lankans to execute their operations in Sri Lanka."Dr. Karunaratne is also the Chairman of Human Resource Development (Pvt) Ltd, Deputy Chairman, International Institute of Management and Associated Motor Finance Co Ltd.A.K.
