A.K.K.Engineers builds Lanka's largest pool in Piliyandala A.K. K. Engineers (Pvt) Battaramulla Ltd has successfully built Sri Lanka's largest swimming pool for Piliyandala Central College. The pool would be officially opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at 4.p.m.today. The mentor behind the project, Dr. Rohan Karunaratne said this pool is unique since it was built at a cost of around Rs. 43 million which is at least 50% less of the currently market price for a project of this nature. He said that the main reason for this is that the contract was designed and built by them which eliminated a lot of red tape in between. He said that the project was built for the Sports Ministry and they have also tendered the lowest offer. The pool will be open to the public as well and is a project initiated by the then Minister of Sports Gamini Lokuge. "We must also thank the present Sports Minister Mahindanana Aluthgamage for his motivation to make this a reality." Commenting in the industry he said that one of the biggest problems they face is the lack of skill labour. "This is because mega development projects are simultaneously happening all over the country and there is high demand for them." He also said that another gray area is the haphazard manner in which overseas contractors and designers work in Sri Lanka. Dr. Karunaratne who is the President of Ceylon Institute of Builders said that it was encouraging to see foreign expertise in Sri Lanka.
