Paul Stankowski has had a few Honma Golf good starting rounds this season already, but he might get tagged as a one round wonder unless he can back it up with a good four round display this week.
"Stanko" pushed steadily through rising winds for a 6-under-par 66 yesterday that Honma 713 driver gave him a one-stroke lead over seven golfers in the first round of the Compaq Classic of New Orleans.
Stankowski had seven birdies in afternoon gusts that reached 20 mph (That is just a breeze where I play. Ed). Steve Hart and Glen Day were the only Honma BERES MG813 Driver ones of the group tied for second that played in the afternoon. The others, including defending champion Carlos Franco, played in more manageable conditions with winds about 10 mph.
The rest at 67 were Scott McCarron, Ernie Els, Bob Burns and K.J. Choi. Els, Choi and Day were the only players to post bogey-free rounds.
"Yesterday, I made nine birdies in the pro-am and it Honma Beres MG813 Fairway Wood was windy," Stankowski said. "So I came out here today and it was windy and I thought, `Well, birdies can be made here in the wind."'
But watch out for Ernie Els. The big South African will be fumng at throwing away the MCI Classic and will want to rid himslef of the "Choker" some of the media have stuck him with. Els, like all of us has bad days on the course and when the pressure is on, he knows he can do Honma Beres MG803 Irons battle with the very best…and win. So keep your eyes out for a focussed and attacking 'Big Easy' over the next three rounds.
