The Milky Way is a fabulous sight if you watch is from desolate places. It's really stunning. What we see from within SriLanka is nothing.
The best places I have seen this is from Chile. Elqui Valley, & Coonabarabran in NSW Australia. I have visted other places in the USA & Tasmania but the weather didn't permit a good view.
There's no light pollution is these areas being very remote from the major cities and also the high altitude counts. A photograph doesn't do justice to what you see with the naked eye.
It depends on the time you visit these places and also the weather conditions on the day.
