Sri Lanka cannot achieve economic development by suppressing the rule of law, MP Mangala Samaraweera told the House today.
He said that this is an unhappy budget despite the end of war and is an “IMF approved wish list”.
“We hear that an anti-democratic constitution is being drafted and this autocratic suppression would lead to the economic ruin of the country”, he said.
Mr. Samarweera said that the AG’s Department being under the president, and police promotions directly handled by the Defence Ministry is a way of suppressing the rule of law.
He said that the opposition should bring an impeachment against certain judges and a committee should be appointed to review the impartiality of the judiciary.
