(Lanka-e-News, October 08, 11.30 PM) Supreme Court ordered today (08) former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunga to pay a symbolic damage of Rs. three million to the state for misuse of power and for breach of sovereignty through selling off 224 acres of land located at Sri Jayawardhanapura Diyawanna Oya acquired for a flood prevention project. The Supreme Court further nullified the deeds pertaining to the deal and ordered Asia Pacific Golf Course Company Limited to hand over the land back to Urban Development Authority. Businessman Ronnie Peiris was also ordered to pay a damage of Rs. two million to the state and the Bribery Commission was directed to conduct a full probe pertaining to this deal. The sentence was issued when a petition filed by two retired public officials, Raja Senanayaka and Sugathapala Medis, was considered by a panel of judges comprised of the Chief Justice, justices Shirani Thilakawardhana and P.A. Rathnayaka. Eight former residents of the lands also had joined the case as parties to the petition later. Twenty one persons including former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunga, businessmen Ronie Peris and Sumal Perera, Chairman of the Urban Development Authority, Asia Pacific Golf Course Company Limited and the Board of Investment are the defendants. Counsel J.C. Weliamuna appeared for the petitioners.
