Symbian Anna Refreshes the Platform
The newest Symbian software release will help deliver the goal of 150 million new Symbian device sales, and offers a great upgrade experience for millions more existing Symbian users. Known as Symbian Anna, the new software delivers new icons; usability enhancements; a faster and easier-to-use browser; virtual portrait QWERTY for fast typing; and refreshed Ovi Maps with simpler, quicker search and new public transportation routes.
Nokia’s newest devices, the Nokia X7 and Nokia E6, both come equipped with Symbian Anna (see article below). Also, Nokia will soon make the Symbian Anna software update available to existing users of the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6 and Nokia E7 via OTA downloads.
Developers can create applications for Symbian Anna smartphones using Qt SDK 1.1, currently available as a Release Candidate.
While the transition to Windows Phone continues, Nokia plans to ship another 150 million Symbian devices. This will be in addition to Nokia’s existing installed base of 200 million Symbian devices, which includes 100 million Qt-enabled devices, of which 75 million are touchscreen devices. While Symbian Anna is the first update of its kind, Nokia plans future software updates to ensure a continuous stream of new experiences and features for developers and consumers alike.
