The biggest complaint against Automatic transmission vehicles is that they are less fuel economical then manual transmission vehicles. This is a serious issue nowadays because of the high fuel prices.

I thought this was topic with timely value...

So people, share your thoughts and experiences on this matter, to help prevent big chunks of money being wasted from people's pockets :D

good topic...

changing it to manual wont do the job..coz it u want to change it to manual u mite as well by a manual...

in certain cars there is a option.. like in mercedez benz u hv da option of puting it to E= ecoomical or S=normal..

in E save petrol..but its bit slow...i hvent really felt the difference of the speed tho...its just gears change bit late...

and another option is u can manually control da fuel pump jet..(mechanic wud do) . by doing that u can control da amount of petrol shot to the engine... but dis option harms ur engine in long term basis.

and another thing u can do is not to press da accelerator forcibly to change the gears...coz the car has its own way to change automatically. when u was it it use more fuel and not only that it damage ur engine..

i think there is more..these are the things i do...

Do a manual conversion cost about Rs60000(with out the gear box),more economical, saves money,a lot faster, and more fun(not always)
WTH! If people wanted manual, they would get manual, not get an automatic and convert to manual! I'm talking about driving techniques...

What I'm doing these days is;
1. No big accelerations....picking up smoothly
2. RPM never goes above 2000
3. No sudden brakes. I try to bring it to a halt smoothly.
4. In the traffic blocks, I change the gear to neutral
5. Not using the accelerator in a slope...let the force take you down :D

like that....

Do it.. then it'll be the beginning of your never ending troubles..

Don't touch the fuel pump.... never.. no matter how much is the fuel cost..
u'll get engine problems that u never heard of ..

    I'm speaking form experience ..

whatever you do don't convert auto car into man because this completely wrecks the economy of the car. it stresses the engine even more

manual is the way to go. you have control of the car, whereas in an auto it does whatever it wants. manual is much better than auto when overtaking etc...

most new cars now come with tip-tronic and semi-tronic transmissions

these are pretty cool as you can change gears in an automatic gear...like one of my friends has a new toyota aurion 2007 here is australia and he puts it into S (a gear in the shift column) and that gear is broken into 5 different speeds. He can shift up and down while the car is an original automatic but semi-tronic/tip-tronic.

i'm not saying i'm going slow. acceleration is slow. if there is no traffic, i can reach 100+ :P

and what i've seen is those people going rampage on the road in the morning are not any faster when reaching the destination. they are using a lot of fuel, and not getting there sooner...maybe a little sooner, but not a lot!

government is planing to build parking lots around Colombo to reduce traffic and for the security..

parking areas are nearly 15km far away from Peta.. (its Werehera for 120 bus root and Katubadda for Gall road),,

if this happens most of us never be able to drive again..

    cheers..

yes. when you are using the peddle softly, it changes the gears at lower speeds. puts to 3rd as low as 30 iirc. if you use it hard, then it doesn't change till you get to high speeds. i've gone upto like 70 in the 2nd gear when overtaking. when you want a sudden acceleration, you give a jerk to the peddle and the gear drops to the lower one.

yeah you're right but if drive a manual correctly it wont be much of a case...for example when the car is on a upright slope and you're at a traffic light (very unlikely scenario in SL but here in Aus it happens pretty often). when the car is on an upright slope (front of car is facing up) and when someone is at a traffic light they don't equally apply the accel. and release the clutch...therefore the car falls back before they drive off. this is dangerous because if the car goes back too much it will hit the car stopped behind

then u can drive in to the old CTB grounds, now where they issue license ..

and enjoy some fun rides inside it,(with all the soft acceleration:rofl:) and take a bus from there..
