Indian media reported that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had told “the State Assembly that the State government would consult the Centre and take a decision on banning political parties and organisations which supported the outlawed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).” The Indian news agency, UNI said that C. Gnanasekaran (Congress) demanded the arrest of Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko for offering open support to the LTTE. He said the LTTE has emboldened to kill Indian fishermen because of the support offered to it by political parties in the state and demanded that the government impose a ban on them. Replying to a query by Gnanasekaran the Chief Minister said the state government would inform the Centre about the involvement of LTTE in the killing of five fishermen from Kanniyakumari and abduction of 12 fishermen and seek its views and take actions.The state government would also let the centre know, the views expressed by leaders of various political parties in the house, seek their opinion and take a decision on slapping a ban on political parties, which supported the LTTE, said UNI.Analysts now believe that India which has been dithering on the issue of dealing with the LTTE, due mainly to pressures from Tamil Nadu, now has the upper hand to take some firm action. The LTTE, as usual, has overstepped its mark by overestimating its military capability and has made the wrong move in killing and abducting Indian fishermen. This is a crime that neither Karunanidhi nor Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, can ignore. Analysts concede that the LTTE has given the Indians a legitimate reason to intervene decisively in the interests of India.
