Telegram Service To Be Scrapped
Posts Minister Jeevan Kumaratunge has said the Postal Department would scrap the telegram service in the country.
Kumaratunge observes that the move is aimed at minimizing the losses incurred by the Postal Department.
The Postal Department spends Rs. 50 on each telegram although the service is offered at very low rates to the consumers.
According to Kumaratunge, the decision to scrap telegrams would not affect the people due to the latest modes of communication like sms messages, e-mails and couriers services used by a majority of them.
However, the decision is yet to receive Presidential approval in order to implement it.
