Thanuja Jayawardane (of Rasa Risi Gee fame) in an interview with Sunday Mawbima asks, "How can supplying the people's demand through mass media be morally wrong?" When I read through these lines, I asked my self; "She's right.Could it be a sin really?" (Demand Supply. The foundation of modern day economics) My imagination tried to simulate "Thanuja's Principle of Media Morality" to various other disciplines of our society. Scenario #1 A heroin dealer in Colombo distribute free samples of heroin among school children in Colombo. After few weeks, the children get addicted to the drug. There after the dealer doesn't need to "promote" the product among his "target market". Because the addicted young crowed "Demand" for more and more heroin. Then the drug dealer ask "What's wrong in giving them what they are asking for?" Scenario # 2 Now, the above scenario was an example away from the mass media. What about a pure example from the industry represented by Thanuja her self? Thanuja is presenting her hit show "Rasa Risi Gee" on Sirasa TV. A fan from Dambulla calls online. "Hellooow! Kauwda may?" asks Thanuja (Hello. Who's here?) "Akkay, mama Dambullen Roshan" (I'm Roshan from Dambulla) "Ow Malli, monawada oyata apen ona?" (Yes malli, Make your request!) "Akkay, berida oyage kalisama galawala pennana?" (Akkay, can you take your pants off?) Now, Thanuja being the greatest TV host in Sri Lanka, who has understood the "needs and wants" of "people" could not deny this request. Because, according to her "moral principles" supplying the people's demand through mass media is not immoral.
