Ok so there's been a plethora of new songs being released as a tribute for our cricket team. A few of them have been given some cool videos as well. This thread is a review of these Music videos (MVs) and would be used to discuss their pros and cons. I have rated the songs out of 5 stars, based on 4 qualities: Video, Singing, Vocals and Beats. The list of songs here are not placed in any order.

1st up we have the latest release from A-Tune and Funky Dirt "The Cricket Song".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePezb1HEId0

This 4.14 min video had an intro of 37 seconds... wtf... anyway.

Video :*****5
Singing :**2
Vocals :*1
Beats :***3
Overall :***3

Pros: Nice video, Good Lyrics, Excellent rapping.

Cons: Bad vocals, Rather average beats, Average singing, Tune is repetitive to the point that after the first 1 and half mins you get bored enough to listen to something else.

Overall : Could have been a good song but the fact that the singing was like someone crying through their nose ruined the whole point, its supposed to be a cheering song, where's the vibe, the exhilaration, the screaming crowds, where are the classy beats that would make even non Sri Lankans scream Sri Lanka!

2nd, we have the BnS Noodles AD song "Hot n Spicy".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3PNFrhSH4o

Ok so its a noodle advertisement, but meh, it's released as a Cricket song so I thought might as well put it here.

Video:*****5 (mainly cause of all the cute chics [the cheerleaders could stand to lose some weight though, nobody likes donut stomachs:P])
Singing:***3
Vocals:***3
Beats:**2
Overall:***1/2 3 1/2

Pros: As I said before cute chics.

Cons: Rather average beats, Too much percussion (just sounds like someone beating on an old belekke tin cans and metal rubbish bins), it's a noodle AD why the hell is it released as a cricket song. -_-

Overall : Rather average song with noisy beats.

3rd up we have the theme song from the new Movie Sinhawalokanaya "Hip Hip Hooray".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLKqd3MWvU4

I know most people have been trashing Sinhawalokanaya, saying that its a copy of Lagaan. Honestly though who the f*** gives a damn apart from maybe the Indians. It's a Lankan movie. Why does the fact that it resembles an Indian movie make it distasteful. Sure they have borrowed the theme and concept of a struggle for freedom revolving around a cricket match, but why's that reason to trash on this movie. As I said before it's a LANKAN movie, we should be supporting it and going to the cinema complexes instead of bending over for every Bollywood movie in existence. I wonder if those people who complain about Sinhawalokanaya realize just how many times the Indians have copied other people. Bollywood is notorious for it's illegal carbon copies of Hollywood movies as well as Korean movies. And it's pretty shameful how we keep singing praises and contributing to the Bollywood economy while thrashing our own struggling film economy. So on that note, SINHAWALOKANAYA IS A POP FILM. ITS A FEEL GOOD FILM. ITS GOT CLASS. GO ENJOY IT. AND STOP TROLLING WHERE TROLLING AIN'T NEEDED.

Ok after that little rant almost forgot what the purpose of the thread was, my heart felt apologies. Ah yes the review on the "Hip Hip Hooray" song is down there \/

Video:*****5
Singing:***3
Lyrics:***3
Beats:*****5
Overall:****4

Pros: Good video, Good chorus, Nice use of papare, Nice beats, The cheering is good, Also its the only song out of the list that can be called a cheering song.

Cons: The singing was auto tuned too much, The main singer's voice was almost too piercing for the year, The lyrical rhyming wasn't the greatest.

Overall: A rather nice cheering song, Nothing to rave about, It could hardly compete with with songs like K'naan's "Waving Flag", Shakira's "Waka Waka" or Super Junior's "Victory Korea". But in Sri Lankan terms its a good song for cheering on our team. "HIP HIP HOORAY, SINHAWALOKAYE".

@ no.4 we have "We Are The Lions" by D Tap.

Eugh, I'm gonna tell you from the start, this song is pretty bad. When I first saw this song on youtube my face went from n_n to -_- in the first 20 seconds.

Video:****4
Singing:*1
Vocals:*1
Beats:***3
Overall:**2

Pros: Good video, Ok beats.

Cons: Really lousy singing, Horrible vocals, At one point they tried singing in english and honestly i had no idea what language it was. And why are they looking all emo and shit, Did someone just die? The singing, I'll say again, was absolutely horrible, Sounded as if someone was stabbing Justin Beiber with a ball point pen.

Overall: Waste of time and broadband.

5th, we have Iraj and Jayasri's "Lion Nation".

Ok so it doesn't have a MV but I figured since its got some popularity that I might as well chuck it in here.

Video:N/A
Singing:***3
Vocals:****4
Beats:***3
Overall:***3

Pros: Nice singing by both artists, Nice use of beats.

Cons: Slightly repetitive, while the presence of a music video isn't necessary for a good song, a MV is always nice so we have something to watch while we are listening to the song.

Overall: I wouldn't say this is a cheering song, this is more like a passive tribute to the team. While the song quality is rather average, compared to some of the other ones reviewed here its pretty good.

All in all hardly any of these songs are worthwhile cheering songs, the only one that does Lankan music some credit is the Sinhawalkonaya theme song. All others fail on so many levels. A cheering song is defined by exhilarating beats. It should give off a vibe that makes the song stick inside you head. It should make Lankans and non Lankans alike cheer for Sri Lanka. The beats should be of international level (now some guy with nationalistic chillie paste up his a$$ is going to scream that they are Lankan songs for Lankans). Just remember this, the team is going to be representing Sri Lanka in the international media and what do we want backing them up? paparey songs? songs that only we could appreciate? No the songs should be ones that the whole world could AND should appreciate. On that note I'm still waiting for a worthwhile Lankan cheering song to come out.

Peace

Ps. someone had left this rather enlightning song in youtube about the lankan cricet songs :

"BNS song sucks bcoz it's a advertisment for Noodles. But the video is awesome only coz of the girls.

Also do u remember how beautiful was BNS Sri Lankan Matha and Iraj's Api Wenuwen Api & Ranidu's Sebalaleni.

Compared to those tribute songs all the world cup songs released by Sri lanka sucks.

It should have been Iraj, BNS, Natasha Rathnayaka & delon & along with a good lyrics writer. The song should scream Sri lanka and at the same time whisper International"

K, I just saw the Cricket song by Lahiru

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxbLqCleTV8

I have mixed feelings about this song. While it is a (dare I say it) good song, there is something missing and its very noticeable.

Video:N/A
Singing:3
Vocals:3
Beats:3
Overal:3

Pros : The singing is actually not that bad, It has what almost all other cricket songs lack, "Enthusiatic singing"

Cons : The drums... why in heavens name do they keep using those lousy drums. They sound so Indian and sucks up whatever class the song might have. Also a cheering song like this should have some sort of crowd screaming the chorus (In a good way, not a messy way).

Overall : Could have been a good song. Can be summed up in one word : "Messy"

Thinking about how all these songs fail makes me wonder why they didn't get Centigradz to make a song. They are undoubtedly the best pop/RnB group in Sri Lanka (big fan :P). In all honesty songs like "Jaya Jaya Sri Lanka", "Yamu Yamu Peratama" and even the "Skit" from Ru Siri album completely outclass all these songs. While they don't have the necessary oomph and vibe they still have the enthusiasm backing them up. Does anyone know if Centigradz are making a Cricket song?
Please tell me they are, I'm not in SL so I don't get the latest rumors and gossip

Edit: The reason Lahiru's song fails is pretty much cause of the drums, most fail lankan songs have 1 thing in common. The drum is made into the main instrument not a supporting instument, they don't have regularly paced beats that come on briefly and vanish. Having the drum as the main instrument ruins the song. It just sounds like some untalented roudy school kid banging away at something, to a tune that only he has in his head. Ever tried drumming to a tune in your head? Its impossibly hard to hang on to the tune. As beats would eventually merge into each other, until all you have is an unending din of tuneless drumming. Pretty much a wall of percussion, and it sounds really REALLY unproffesional.
Check out this link for an example in cool drumming:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxloG90p_UA

while they did focus on the drum as the main instrument here (soak up the irony) they managed to lessen the messy sound by adding several different drums that come and go adding a layer to the background drumming. Its this kind of layering that I meant.

Well you're either lacking some knowledge about music or Cricket to rate Lahiru as 3 and BnS as 3 1/2.

BnS one sucks big time with it's video and lyrics and cannot consider it as a World Cup song.

Same goes to Sinhawalokanaya. In a world Cup song, Sole objective should be to wish the team and encourage people. BTW those aforementioned BnS and Sinhawalokanaya were released due to two different marketing strategies.

lol :P i never said this was serious. This was just my opinionated self ranting. I mentioned earlier that i rated bns for its cute chics (well who wouldn't :P), and sinhawalokanaya is better than all of the previous ones combined.
    Deal with it-_-

they don't have to be marketed as such. What i mean is that the song doesn't have to be a dedicated song to cheer on the team. The fact that some people use the song as a way to cheer on for the team is enough for it to be a cricket song. You get what I'm explaining. It's hard to explain, basically it's all dependent on people and their choices. For eg I know a guy who loves the song by BnS even though it sounds so messy. Also K'naan's waving flag had completely different lyrics before it was modified ever so slightly. So that instead of being a song for his country it was a song about football.
As for the rating it's just to give the ppl here a little nudge. There's been too many crap songs coming out and instead of trying to polish up the song, they polish the video, and there's a bunch of tuneless squirrels in here that are like "go go D Tap" "elaz" "maxxa machan" to songs, that don't deserve to be in an album skit. much less have a spanking new video made for it.
But as i said before it's just my opinionated self. At the end of the day if you took the time to read this and the trouble to reply, thanks n_n

lol sri lanka probably broke a world record for most no. of sports based songs in a month
not surprised, SL is indeed a small nation full of lil "heroes" ( including hero wannabes :P ) but I get the feeling that this is too much.. you don't find this in any other country, even for a mega event like Olympics! Simply put, SL artists have found another gold pit (CWC) to mine gold (songs) outta it
