Based on the novel with the same name by Slavenka Drakulić
This movie sets during the time of the Bosnian war (1992 - 1995). The movie follows the experience of a young female teacher (Samira) from Sarajevo who travels to a remote village in Bosnia to teach.
Soon after her arrival, she hears about the previous teacher who teached there but mysteriously disappeared not too long ago.
Few Days later the village gets suddenly attacked by a group of soldiers. Women and men are separated where the soldiers later kills the men. Remaining women and children are placed in makeshift brothels so called 'rape camps' where they repeatedly gets beaten and raped by the soldiers. It says that they did this as a form of psychological warfare and just simply to humiliate the enemy.
Throughout the film, viewers are exposed to the relentless brutality and suffering that Samira and the other women and children had to go through.
What makes "As if I am not there" unique is its ability to tell a powerful and unsettling story without relying heavily on dialogue. Instead, the film creates a chilling atmosphere that portrays the harsh realities of war.
