Hey Elakiri guys I got some news about the next version of windows
it is windows 7
For more info read this article and please comment

According to News.com, Microsoft is planning to ship the next major version of Windows within roughly three years compared to the more than five years for Windows Vista. It is also to be known internally as Windows 7 from its previous code name of Vienna.

Sources close to the company says that the company discussed Windows 7 last Thursday at a conference for its field sales force in Orlando, Fla.

Some key points for Windows 7 would be:

1. There will be a consumer version as well as a business version.
2. 32-bit and 64-bit editions will be available.
3. A subscription model to complement Windows is being considered, though no decision has been made on that yet.

According to Microsoft:

“Microsoft is scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year time frame, and then the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar.”

It is clear that Microsoft hopes to avoid the delays in Vista which has opened it to much criticism, especially with customers who have signed up under its Software Assurance scheme.

More than 200 programmers are working concurrently on slimming down the Windows kernel for Windows 7, the next version of the operating system. Called ‘MinWin’, it consists of just 100 files and weights in at 25 MB compared to Vista’s 5,000 files and 4 GB core.

MinWin does not have a graphical interface and will not be productized. Still, its size will “Kill the old perception about Windows being bloated software that needlessly takes up space,” according to Eric Traut, who holds the title of distinguished engineer at Microsoft.

Excerpt from ComputerWorld:

A lot of people think of Windows as this really large, bloated operating system, and that may be a fair characterization, I have to admit,” said Eric Traut …

“[So] we created what we call MinWin. It’s still bigger than I’d like it to be, but we’ve taken a shot at really stripping out all of the layers above and making sure that we had a clean architectural layer there.

The new microkernel will be used internally for all upcoming versions of Windows, including for its media centers, servers, and even small embedded devices.

hell yes coz that 25MB thing can't be true. If it like web enabled version like only core files in the computer and others loading from internet as we use it like subscription service. But i don't think MS will release such OS that soon in 3 years

Dubbed MinWin, the software is essentially a stripped down version of the Windows kernel that takes up 40Mb of disk space. A full version of Windows Vista claims 4Gb.
OS will not be 25M or 40M it takes lot more when you put the appz you want.

The Damn Small Linux (DSL) distribution is the smallest Linux version around. Its developers aim to keep the distribution under 50Mb and the first version measured a mere 22Mb.
In contrast to MinWin, however, DSL offers a fully functional operating system including graphics engine and optional components such as a browser, email client and FTP server.
So MiniWin just the core. Not whole OS for 25M

Anyway think i should try this DSL (Damn Small Linux) :D

    Looks nice for its size.

    Not *the* smallest Linux
Actually DSL is not the very smallest Linux distro out there - merely the best known and most fully featured one. The very smallest is probably shown on www.linuxlinks.com which has a list of FLopply disc based Linux flavours - mostly simple one-task distros such as firewalls or IceCasters but with a few more rounded ones as well. Many are text only rescue kit style functionality but still with the Linux kernel.
