Diary Julia, a memorable weekend, 23.08.2008
On this homepage, there have been many funny and nice reports. But why shouldn’t we also report about the problems, with which we have to fight in the Angels Home? They also form a part of it, and we would like you to share them.
Half a year ago, our employee Catherine told us that 2 000 Rs, some 13 Euro had been stolen from her handbag, which was standing in the personnel room of the manager, and only seldom did the children enter this room. Out of this reason, Frank and I suspected some of the employees of having taken the money. Naturally, we were very shocked and hoped to be able to clear the thing up as soon as possible. Therefore, Frank questioned every employee alone and asked if they had taken the money or suspected somebody. However, not much came out from those conversations, and thus all should sit down at the table, and Frank explained to them that he was were dismayed by it and that this was something he could not tolerate in the Angels Home. He asked the employees to think about it again, and to put the money back within the next 14 days, if somebody of them had it. However, the 3000 Rs. did not turn up within those 2 weeks, and until today we do not know who took them. Without clear proof, we cannot accuse anybody, and therefore we had no choice but to leave the thing alone and explain to the employees that we did not want to experience this again. This was also not necessary, until last Friday.
When Steffi, Frank and I appeared in the home around lunch, our Metren came to us in a worried state and told us that 2000 Rs. had gone missing from her safe, where she usually keeps the funds for the weekly shopping. However, this time she knew that nobody from the personnel, but one of the children had stolen the money. At first, we found this suspicion rather vague, and we could hardly imagine that this should be true. However, we had to agree that there were girls in the Angels Home, in which you could not trust completely. They are and remain children with Singhalese mentality, which, as we have explained often, is directed mainly towards lying and betraying in many cases. Additionally, some girls get regular visits from their relatives, which also do not have an immaculate reputation. Who knows what the family members demand from the children during those talks?
Anyway, Metren then informed us that she suspected a certain girl, with which there had been many problems during the last weeks. (We do not want to give a name at this point, as there is no clear proof and we do not want our readers to develop prejudices against any girl.) She also explained us some stories, which we also heard for the first time at this point, and we were really shocked and dismayed, that we had not been told before. The gild had brought money to school very often and had had a good time in the canteen with it. However, this is impossible with our girls, as they do not have money of their own (this is still a written law for children living in an orphanage). Thus, we needed to do everything to find out who had stolen the money. Certainly we did not want to accuse the girls accused by Metren, as you have to take everybody into account, even the personnel.
When the girls came home from school, Frank called them all together and told them that 2000 Rs had been stolen from Metren’s locker and that all of them had to start looking for the money at once. They had 20 minutes time for it, and we agreed that the money should then lie on Metren’s bed, if it was found. While the time passed, we were waiting outside together with the personnel and still we noticed that inside everything was put upside down and searched. However, the money was not found, and thus Frank called each child after lunch and asked them if they knew where the 2000 Rs. were. If you know the girls for some time already, you can see a lot from their body language, irrespectively from what they tell you. Most of them really seemed to be innocent, but with some of them we were not sure if they were telling the truth. Thus, each child was told after lunch to get a chair and sit down in shady place in the garden without talking to the other girls. Thus, we wanted to prevent them to compare their stories. The whole procedure took something like one hour, and then, 20 sitting girls were spread through the garden. At first this seemed like a game for them and not to affect them much. Again and again they started trials of talking among them or making jokes. After one hour, however, it got totally quiet in the Angels Home, and you could see the girls starting to get bored on their chairs. Some even fell asleep and tried somehow comfortable.
Meanwhile, Frank went to Marawila and came back around 16 hrs. with 2 police officers, which entered the courtyard with a police van. When this happened, some of the faces of the girls showed real terror. We then called all girls to one table and one of the two police officers held a long and clear speech, with which he explained to the children, and also the personnel, that theft is against the law and punishable with prison. Yes, the guy knew how to get respect, and all concerned got really thoughtful during his speech. Naturally we did not plan to deliver one of our girls to the police, but we hoped to intimidate them a bit and maybe make them talk.
After the visit of the police, a second round of questioning followed, during which nothing came out, but the usual suspects remained. Thus, the girls were to sit down on their chairs again and they remained there until it got dark. In the meantime, they were allowed to do their gardening work in pairs, but without saying a word. Then they got dinner, and then the children were to go to bed immediately.
Yes, I know, that this sounds really harsh, but we were rather sure that one of the girls must be behind it, and that one or two others needed to know of it. Thus, we tried to do it according to the proverb “all are punished, until somebody will talk”.
How the story goes on, you will be able to read in the second part of the “memorable weekend”…
On Saturday morning, I went to the home already at 8 a.m. together with Steffi. Naturally, we wanted to see how the personnel treats the girls, while we are not there. But, great thanks, they had observed our orders. The girls all did some duties and naturally they were not allowed to talk. The dancing teacher had been cancelled, as we wanted to make clear to the children that we meant it.
When the girls finished their tasks by and by, we let them take their places in the garden again. They were very surprised when we said that. It seems that they did not suspect us to carry the thing through another day. But we said it, and so it was done, und thus they sat another hour and were bored. Before, we had explained to them again that they should think again, if they really did not know who took the money and if yes, they should tell Frank later, when he would come to the home. However, after a while we let the small children (Asadi, Hasini, Dishna, Anne, Hiruni, Shakina, Emesha and Nadisha) sit at a table to do their homework. They were just too bored on their chairs, and additionally for them it was highly improbable that they knew anything.
When Frank came to the home later, he questioned them again, but again without results. I was not there myself (as I was at home on Saturday afternoon, working on the computer), but it seemed to be clear already that the girls were bored from the steady sitting-around. Then Frank started another trial: He distributed sheets of paper to the girls, and on those sheets they should write without giving their names who they suspected of stealing the money. The results were surprising: On all sheets stood the same name (and exactly of the girl also Metren suspected), but on one. There “I don’t know” was written. Frank, however, did not explain the result to the children, but let them take their places on their chairs again, walking around.
Normally the Catholic girls go to school on Saturday afternoon, and the Buddhists have time off and can play. However, not this Saturday: All girls remained in the home and instead of free time, tasks were given. 5 children were forming a group and were given a task, which had been outstanding for some time and was not really pleasant. Thus, on this afternoon, the kitchen was finally cleaned, a certain part of the garden was cared, in the house all cupboards were cleaned and with the assistance of Frank, the large fishpond was cleaned. The girls had no fun with it, but they should have anyway. After all work was done, they should sit down on their chairs in the garden again, and Frank started a last questioning round. Nothing came out from it, even if our suspicions more and more realized based on the body language of the girls. The whole thing seemed to become a test for both sides.
Before Frank left the home, he called all girls and told them that he was very dismayed and angry about this thing. He also announced that the Buddhist children would not go to the temple on Sunday, and that the usual Cricket-afternoon would take place in a different way this time. Some girls were really sad, but we should not give up.
On Saturday evening, I discussed the whole approach again with frank. Then we decided to test the girls only on Sunday morning. If nothing would come out then, we would give in. Actually, even with suspicions, you could not exclude all girls to be innocent.
Before we went to the home on Sunday, we already felt defeated and dismayed, that the affair could not be cleared up according to our plans. But then the telephone rung. Metren was on the other end of the line, and she informed us that the 2000 Rs. had turned up again. She had found them in the morning rolled together in her bag, smiling.
We are really happy that the story has found a positive end, shortly before we wanted to give in. We still do not know who has taken the money, and it seems that we will never find out, but the culprit has in the end got a bad conscience. Who knows what would have happened, if we would not have remained steadfast.
However, we are still dismayed that such things could happen in the Angels Home, and we hope that with our measures we have created enough respect, so that this will not happen again.
