This song according to the writer Prof Sunil Ariyaratne is written based on a legend on King Walagamba. According to this story, King walagamba was running away from advancing enemy "Chola" troups. But the weight of the people inside was too much for the chariot & the horses couldnt run fast enough. At this moment, King's wife, Queen Somadevi got down from the chariot enabling the king to escape but sacrificed her life in the process to the "Chola" army. After 12 years, King walagamba defeated the chola army & became the undisputed king of the land. He built "Somadevi Chaithya" in memory of this great woman who sacrificed her life for him.
