President Mahinda Rajapakse is optimistic that Sri Lanka can achieve direct economic growth through the government's future development plans.
He expressed this optimism at a ceremony organised to grant permanent appointments to valuation officers of the Inland Revenue Department. The event to provide appointments to 250 graduates was organised at Temple Trees. The total number of taxpayers in Sri Lanka is only 400,000. President Rajapakse said this figure should be increased to one million. He was concerned that many taxpayers are evading. Mr. Rajapakse called requested all those who received their new appointments to be determined to strengthen the local economy, eliminating malpractices. He emphasised that their onus should be to safeguard the dignity of their profession.
Deputy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Finance Secretary Dr. P B Jayasundara and Inland Revenue Commissioner A A Wijepala also addressed gathering.
