"Pirate attack on the ship" say SL Navy
The Tamil Tiger rebel group in Sri Lanka says it has rescued twenty-five sailors from a Jordanian ship drifting off the island's north-eastern coast.
The rebels dismissed allegations made by the Sri Lankan naval authorities that they had staged a pirate attack on the ship.
A spokesman for the Sri Lankan navy, Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake told the BBC the navy had received a distress message via the Maritime Rescue Co-ordinating Centre in Britain, saying that the vessel was under armed attack.
Spokesman Dassanayake said the armed pirate attack by the LTTE on the ship is a clear violation of the international maritime laws and the ceasefire agreement.
The Jodanian vessel, 'the Farha III', was carrying 14,000 tonnes of rice from Kakinada, India to Durban in South Africa when it began engine trouble off the coast of Mullativu.
