Navy suspect 40 LTTE cardres killed

Sri Lanka Naval patrolmen confronted with four clusters of LTTE Sea Tiger boats after detecting them heading towards Point Pedro from Kadaikadu, south of Vettilaikerni, yesterday late evening. “Clusters comprised of 20 LTTE boats along with four suicide crafts,” Naval sources said.

In the sea battle that continued for many hours, Naval Fast Attack Craft (FAC) with the support of the Army and the Air Force, destroyed five LTTE boats and damaged nine. Two withdrawing Sea Tiger crafts were also among the destroyed.

The Navy suspects that around 40 LTTE Sea Tiger cardres would have been killed in the battle severely injuring many of the Sea Tiger cardres.

Sri Lankan Army ground troops and the Air Force immediately rushed to the scene of incident backing up with MI 24 helicopter gun ships and Army with fire support utilizing land-based Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) and 130mm artillery to engage the enemy.

“According to intercepted communication channels of the LTTE, Sea Tigers with heavy casualties have asked for immediate reinforcements,” Naval sources further said
