It was the second air attack by Tamil Tiger rebels in a month. On March 26 two aircraft dropped bombs at the Sri Lanka Air Force's main base in Katunayake, adjoining the Colombo International Airport. The attack killed three and wounded 16 airmen. The Tamil Tigers have been fighting since 1983 for a separate homeland for the Tamil minority in the north and east, citing decades of discrimination by the majority Sinhalese.
