TIGO was launched in Sri Lanka in January 2007, to replace the old national brand CELLTEL with a new international brand. Its the first operator in Asia to launch TIGO brand, also it's the 3rd largest operator on this land. It competes with international operators like Dialog Telekom (Telekom Malaysia), Mobitel (Sri Lanka Telecom), Hutch (Hutchison) and Airtel (Bharti Airtel), using technologies GSM/EDGE and hopes to launch UMTS/HSDPA services over 900/1800 and 2100 MHz in 2009.
CELLTEL started their operations in June 1989 on a Motorola TACS system, was the first cellular operator in Sri Lanka as well as South Asia.
