Hashan Tillakaratne was removed from his position as Sri Lanka team manager for the upcoming Test and one-day series against India on Thursday - just a day after the former captain and opening batsman was named as Shriyan Samararatn's successor.
After Samararatne's contract expired after the Asia Cup earlier this month, 41-year-old Tillakaratne was appointed on Tuesday.
But Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge refused to endorse the decision due to political reasons, the Daily Mirror reported.
Tillekaratne's appointment was also made without the approval of the executive committee of the Interim Committee running cricket in Sri Lanka, the report stated.
Tillakaratne played in 83 Tests and scored 4,545 runs and in 200 one-day internationals amassed 3,789 runs.
He made his debut in 1989 and was a regular in the national team for 15 years.
The first of three Tests between Sri Lanka and India gets under way in Colombo on Friday before five one-day internationals next month.
