The sixth round of talks between Sri Lanka's government and the main Tamil party was focused on devolution, an official said Thursday.
"We discussed basic matters about devolution," Suresh Premachandran, a senior legislator from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said.
Premachandran said the issues concerning Tamil detainees, political prisoners and land rights were also discussed.
He said the government team provided them with a note which will be discussed further by the TNA.
The proposal for a senate as a second chamber would be taken up at later discussions.
Meanwhile the Cabinet spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told reporters that the idea of a senate had been mooted and the composition of which would be soon decided through consultations with all Tamil political parties and not just the TNA.
The TNA and government began face-to-face talks in January after President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a high powered ministerial committee to meet the main Tamil party.
